Let’s fill your cup and share this journey together!

MT Mentor is for music therapy students, interns, and professionals who want healthy boundaries and a personalized and sustainable self-care plan.

MT Mentor is led by Jennifer Hicks who has over 25 years of experience as a music therapist and educator. She strongly believes in celebrating new ideas and honoring differing lived experiences all while finding connections and belonging together.

Jen has a passion for expressing joy and gratitude and believes that we thrive in trusting and courageous communities, bearing witness to and holding space for each other’s stories. {Learn more about Jen here.}

I am incredibly grateful to have benefited from Jen’s wisdom as a mentor and a human being within a “Brave Space.” When I joined MT Mentor, I decided not only to prioritize my self-care but to ensure that I was going to utilize resources to grow as a professional and an individual. As a music therapy student, I learned that having multiple perspectives and sources of feedback were essential to continual growth in the music therapy field. I have also learned through MT Mentor that support, vulnerability, and continual practice of cultural humility are also vital to becoming the future board-certified professional I strive to be. Jen is insightful, compassionate, and authentic. I look forward to engaging more with her on my journey to live in line with my values.

Peer supervision groups will be based on whatever is top of mind and top of heart for YOU each week, with time for sharing both personal and professional challenges, celebrations, and questions with the other members of our community.

A form will be available for members to sign up in advance to talk via phone or Zoom during office hours. Otherwise, members may also simply call Jen during the designated time. If the line is busy, members may leave a message for Jen to return. Calls will be limited to 10-15 minutes if other members are waiting.

New packets of content will be made available on the first of each month.

Previous packets of content will remain available for members for as long as the information remains valid. Updates on content may be done over time.

Content will focus on topics related to the following:

  • Self-care – sustainable self-care, burnout, physiological self-care, musical identity and self-care, intersections between social justice and self-care, boundaries, etc.
  • Self-awareness – core values, mission, vision, bias, privilege, appropriation, reflective and reflexive practices, imposter syndrome, etc.
  • Mindfulness – appropriation, self-compassion, mindfulness-based practices, etc.
  • Music therapy – music therapy methods, humanistic/person-centered theory, exploring trauma in music therapy, anti-oppressive practices, etc.
  • And more! Content will continue to evolve based upon the needs of the community – and now includes book clubs every other month centered on a book chosen by the current members!
  • Content packets include CBMT learning objectives and domains, detailed information on the topic (including videos, slides, and transcripts),  reflection documents, references, and graphics/infographics.
  • Members also have access to a shared Google drive for bonus material such as session plan templates, sample contracts, student reflection forms, and more.

While membership rates will be adjusted as time passes, your cost as a member will never go up! Once you join, you are “locked in” to that price for as long as you choose to remain a member.

Yes! If you are a board-certified music therapist, you now have access to 29 CBMT pre-approved asynchronous CMTEs, including 3 credits towards CBMT’s ethics requirement!

In addition, you can earn 1 CMTE for every 50-minute peer supervision group that you attend and 1 CMTE for every 50-minute content video that you complete. For these additional opportunities, members will have access to a Google form to request a certificate for proof of attendance and should write a summary for each quarter of supervision groups they attend or the content unit/book club they complete, connecting their learning with the CBMT Board Certification Domains. These qualify under “Other Continuing Education Opportunities” in the “Workshops/Courses/Conferences/Independent Learning” category (visit CBMT’s website for further details).

Jen brings authenticity, thoughtful intention, and lots of experience to her role as a supervisor and mentor. She has been a mentor to me, as someone I’ve been able to reach out to to talk through challenging clinical and supervisory scenarios. She always listens, holds a safe and open space, and shares her honest feedback. I can always trust Jen to be honest, encouraging, open, and intentional.
